Abstract

Objective. To clarify the place of the diffuse astrocytic tumors in primary CNS tumor morbidity in Kharkiv region from 2000 to 2015.

Materials and methods. The research is based on 1920 case histories of patients with tumors of the central nervous system and their biopsies in the period from 2000 to 2015 years. Sex, age, tumor location, histology, and structure were analyzed. The statistical data was processed with Microsoft Excel 2010. Methods of mathematical statistics were used.

Results. Diffuse gliomas accounted for 46 % of all primary CNS tumors, 58 % of relapsed CNS tumors, and took the 1st place in the mortality rate from CNS tumors in Kharkiv region. 70.5 % of glioblastomas relapsed within the 1st year after surgery. 43.69 % of primary glioblastomas had intratumoral cysts.

Conclusion. 1. The incidence rate for glioma was higher in Kharkiv region (22.3 % from general CNS tumor incidence rate and 26 % from primary CNS tumor incidence rate) in comparison to WHO and CBTRUS data (12–15 % and 14.9 %, respectively). 2. Intratumoral cysts were found more commonly in glioblastomas than in other diffuse astrocytic tumors (43.69 % versus 33.47 %; Pearson’s chi-squared test =6.703; p < 0.01). 3. The most recurrent cases were represented by diffuse gliomas (58 %). 4. 70.5 % of glioblastomas relapsed within a year after surgery. 5. Glioblastoma was the most common cause of mortality in neurosurgical departments among all primary CNS tumors.
