Abstract

In the present retrospective investigation, the long-term effects of continuous intrathecal opioid therapy via implantable infusion pump systems were examined in 129 patients with chronic nonmalignant pain syndromes. The follow-up period was 4 years. In 27 patients there was a combination of pain and spastic syndromes. Most of the patients were satisfied with the therapy and had a good pain reduction throughout the follow-up period. In this study we analyzed the indications, selection of patients and test phase for this kind of therapy. We reported about the standards of implantation, side effects, complications and failures of such treatment. Our experience with the long-term opioid medications spinal administration for nonmalignant pain encouraged us to select patients carefully. Good results with a significant pain reduction were demonstrated at this kind of treatment compared to others methods of therapy.
